Rally for Free Speech at Adelaide’s Universities
Rally for Free Speech at Adelaide’s Universities
Oppose the definition of antisemitism adopted by 39 Australian universities!
Adelaide rally to denounce the adoption of a new definition of antisemitism at South Australia's universities
A new definition of antisemitism that is in alignment with the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) definition is to be adopted immediately by 39 universities in Australia.
This new definition, like that of the IHRA, conflates antisemitism and Zionism and criticism of Israel to shut down staff and students around Australia who are standing up for justice for Palestinians and against genocide.
Rally in support of staff and students at our universities!

Palestine At The Epicentre Of A ‘New Middle East’
Pushing the boundaries of International Law to advance colonialism, oligarchy and empire
What does Trump’s proposed “Transfer” plan, historically and ideologically, mean for the state of Israel? How practical is this plan? And how would the Arab countries respond to it?
How does Trump’s proposition impact the rule of law following the new American sanctions on the International Criminal Court (ICC) and South Africa in light of its application to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) accusing Israel of Genocide?
What is Trump’s vision for Palestine and the ‘New Middle East’? And how does the formation of his administration influence such a vision?
Is there a place for a ‘Free Palestine’ in the ‘New Middle East’? And what does the international recognition of a ‘Palestinian State’ actually mean under the current circumstances?
Can the anti-genocide movement succeed to bring about justice for Palestine at a time of an oligarchs-funded mass hi-tech silencing?
To answer all these questions and more, please join us in this important discussion with Palestinian-Dutch analyst and commentator on Palestinian affairs, Mouin Rabbani.
Among other positions, Mouin Rabbani has served as Principal Political Affairs Officer with the Office of the UN Special Envoy for Syria, Head of Middle East with the Martti Ahtisaari Peace Foundation, Senior Middle East Analyst and Special Advisor on Israel- Palestine with the International Crisis Group, and Researcher with Al-Haq, West Bank affiliate of the International Commission of Jurists.
Rabbani is Co-Editor of Jadaliyya, where he also hosts the Connections podcast, co- hosts the Long Form Conversations podcast, and edits its Quick Thoughts feature. He is also Contributing Editor of Middle East Report.
Rabbani is Non-Resident Senior Fellow at the Centre for Conflict and Humanitarian Studies (CHS), and Non-Resident Fellow at both the Middle East Council on Global Affairs and Democracy for the Arab World Now (DAWN).
This event is hosted by Palestine Justice Movement Sydney and Free Palestine Melbourne, in collaboration with Australian Friends of Palestine Association, Friends of Palestine Western Australia, Palestine Action Group Canberra, Tasmanian Palestine Advocacy Network, Justice for Palestine Magan-djin, Palestine Solidarity Network Aotearoa, Palestine Israel Ecumenical Network and Perth Mums for Palestine.
The webinar will be broadcasted nation-wide and will be recorded and published on the hosting organisations' online platforms for future views.
The video recording will also be sent out to registrants afterwards.
The audio recording of this conversation will also be made available on this Palestinian podcast.
All donations will be used to support Palestinian families in Gaza.

Vigil at Royal Adelaide Hospital
Vigil at Royal Adelaide Hospital
From the 25th to the 29th of January 2025, health workers from all over the world held a rally and white tent protest in front of the UN headquarters in Geneva to demand a permanent ceasefire in Gaza.
This vigil replicates those demands and also calls for the immediate protection of medical staff and patients in the besieged territory. After 1196 healthcare workers killed, 264 unlawfully detained, 516 attacks on health facilities, 0 fully functioning hospitals, and >9000 requests for medical evacuations denied, Palestinians are still enduring genocide due to Israel's decimation of the Gaza's healthcare system.

Webinar: The Palestinian Anti-Apartheid Struggle
Event by Palestine Justice Movement Sydney, endorsed by AFOPA
Webinar:
The Palestinian Anti-Apartheid Struggle
The Axis of Resistance and the Fragile Ceasefire Deals - Teetering on the Brink of a ‘New Middle East’
Can the ceasefire deals in Lebanon and Gaza be considered a victory for the axis of resistance?
What perspectives does the ceasefire deal in Gaza present about the state of Israel, the prospects of a Palestinian state and the future of the wider region?
Is there still a chance for unity within the Palestinian political ecosystem? How is the current situation in the West Bank impacting the unity efforts?
Should there be a place for uncompromising parties like Hamas in any future Palestinian polity?
How will the concept of ‘resistance’, in support of the Palestinian struggle for justice, endure in the face of another Trump administration?
To answer all these questions and more, please join us in this brilliant discussion with Abdaljawad Omar.
Abdaljawad is a Palestinian assistant professor and writer based in Al-Bireh, Palestine. He teaches in the Department of Philosophy and Cultural Studies at Birzeit University. His work explores questions of colonialism, resistance, and ideology, with a focus on Palestine.
In addition to his academic research, he is a regular contributor to Mondoweiss, Electronic Intifada, and other publications, where he provides commentary on contemporary political and intellectual developments.

Film Screening: Twilight Time
Non AFOPA event
Special screening of TWILIGHT TIME + Q&A @ Odeon Star, Semaphore
About this event
Event lasts 2 hours
Join us at Oden Star, Semaphore for a screening of John Hughes' new documentary, TWILIGHT TIME, plus a special Q&A session with Film Director John Hughes after the film.
TWILIGHT TIME is a gripping profile of one of the world’s greatest scholars of military strategy and defence, the Australian professor Desmond Ball – the man who unflinchingly examined Cold War nuclear strategy and advocated for the sovereign defence of Australia.
Hailed by former US president Jimmy Carter as “the man who saved the world” for his work proving the fallacy of the doctrine of ‘limited nuclear war’, Ball is remembered as the ‘insurgent intellectual’ whose life-long investigation of controversial US military base Pine Gap enraged Australia’s defence establishment. Ball’s opposition and activism against the American war in Vietnam in the 1960s earned him decades of ASIO surveillance. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, Ball offered guidance on signals intelligence to ethnic minorities targeted by the Burmese military. His work on Australian governments’ complicity with the Indonesia invasion of East Timor in 1975 gave the public a taste of secrets governments would prefer remain hidden.
Employing a wealth of archival footage, veteran documentarian John Hughes (Senses of Cinema, MIFF 2022) captures the heated atmosphere of late-20th-century geopolitics through a distinctly Australian lens, bearing witness to events such as US ambassador Ed Clarke’s ‘peppercorn’ speech at North West Cape, Gough Whitlam’s infamous dismissal from office and the civil unrest that rocked the nation during the Vietnam War. Twilight Time is a rich – and tremendously timely – look at Australia’s complicated involvement in global strategy, defence policy and mass surveillance.

Free Film Screening: Aida Returns
Free Film Screening: Aida Returns
Plus delicious lunch and Q&A with the film’s Director
Join Glimmer of Hope Inc. for a poignant and powerful cinematic experience as we present Aida Returns, a film by Carol Mansour. About the Film:
This film is a poignant, sometimes sad, sometimes painful, sometimes humorous, often absurd story of a multiple journey: the journey of loss as the director’s mother Aida struggled with losing herself to Alzheimer’s disease, but finding solace in her repeated “returning” to the Yafa and Palestine of her youth; the journey of the loss of a parent; and the ultimate return journey back to Yafa where Aida would finally find rest and be herself once more.
Close to four years after Aida’s passing away, the director’s friend and colleague Tanya who lives in Ramallah came to visit Beirut. When she heard about Aida’s wishes and yearning for Yafa, Tanya suggested that she herself carries the ashes back. The film accompanies director Carol Mansour as she engineers a way to return her mother to Yafa in search of eternal rest and peace for her. A return that is aided by an unlikely set of friends and strangers all coming together to facilitate what should have been a simple journey. This journey is at the same time very private and personal, while resonating with hundreds of thousands of Alzheimer’s sufferers and their families as well as hundreds of thousands of Palestinian refugees awaiting their return home.
This film is a tribute to the lost past of the director’s family, an attempt to restore part of both an individual and a collective memory, a poetic nod and affirmation, and a call to action to all exiled Palestinians to defy the structures forbidding from returning to their homes, even after death.
About GOH:
Founded in 2016, Glimmer of Hope Inc. is a non-profit community association that brings together Australian residents who identify as Palestinians to preserve and promote Palestinian culture and heritage.

Film Screening: No Other Land
No Other Land
Commercial screening by Palace Nova Cinemas
One of the most important films of the year and winner of both the ‘Best Documentary’ and ‘Audience’ awards at the 2024 Berlin Film Festival, NO OTHER LAND is a sobering yet inspiring look at Palestinian resistance under occupation.
Basel Adra, a young Palestinian activist and lawyer from Masafer Yatta - a group of Palestinian villages in the southern West Bank - has been fighting his community’s mass expulsion by the Israeli occupation since childhood - the largest single act of forced displacement ever carried out in the occupied West Bank.
Striking up an unlikely friendship with Israeli investigative journalist Yuval Abraham, who lives a starkly different life to Adra, the two with the help of an Isreali-Palestinian filmmaking collective commit themselves to documenting and protesting the demolition of Palestinian communities in the West Bank. Film as the IDF destroys everything from homes, schools and playgrounds to ceiling up drinking wells in order to make a military training ground.
One of the front-runners for the Best Documentary Oscar and an audience award winner at an assortment of festivals worldwide, NO OTHER LAND is a vital and inspiring testament to the resilience of the Palestinian people.

As Israel savagely pounded Gaza daily over the Christmas and New Year period, killing untold numbers of Palestinians, obliterating the medical and hospital system, murdering journalists, medical staff, and anyone else under the American supplied bombs and in the sights of the Israeli quadcopters and snipers, our Government remained silent.
Silence from our government, as the Israeli military arrested Dr Hussam Abu Safiya, Director of the destroyed Kamal Adwan Hospital in Beit Lahiya in Northern Gaza on Friday 29 December and took him to the notorious Sde Teiman detention camp in Israel.
Silence, as babies died of cold in the bitter wet winter, as aid tents were flooded with pouring rain, where their families could not keep them warm or dry.
Silence, as Israel continued to strangle the movement of aid into Gaza, especially into the north, where people are starving.
Silence, as footage floods our social media of desperate packs of starving dogs eating the flesh of dead and wounded Palestinians lying in Gaza streets and ruins of bombed out buildings.
And continued silence from our government about its obligations to uphold international law in the face of calls from the United Nations' various agencies and the thousands of letters, emails and messages from ordinary Australians demanding that we act according to International Law.
WE DEMAND THAT OUR GOVERNMENT ENDS ITS SILENCE, THAT IT ACTS IN ACCORDANCE WITH INTERNATIONAL LAW, AND ENACTS CONCRETE MEASURE AGAINST ISRAEL TO HALT THIS GENOCIDE!
See the Media Release of the Australian Centre for International Justice, 20 July 2024, detailing exactly what our government should be doing to pressure Israel to stop the genocide and adhere to international law.

It’s going to be a hot day! Bring umbrellas, hats and water!
Now that the Assad Government has fallen in Syria, the Israelis have moved into the vacuum created by this crisis and have taken over the demilitarised buffer zone in Syrian-controlled territory. On Tuesday 10 December, the international war criminal, Benjamin Netanyahu, declared that the Golan Heights will remain part of Israel ‘for eternity’. This is theft pure and simple; this is colonialism right in front of our eyes!
We must continue to DEMAND more from our government. We cannot allow our representatives to watch silently while Israel conducts this illegal activity. We don’t want WORDS any more! We want ACTION!
The international rules are there for all to see! Australia is a signatory to the Rome Statute that governs the International Court of Justice. We are a signatory to the Genocide Convention, the Human Rights Convention, the Convention of the Rights of the Child and so on! Israel is in breach of all these international instruments and more. Australia is obligated through these conventions to act. And the 19 July finding of the International Court of Justice is clear: Australia must not give succor to Israel due to its illegal occupation of Palestine!
The Australian Centre for International Justice, in a media release in July this year gave a very clear statement about what Australia must do following the International Court of Justice finding of 19 July:
“ACIJ calls on the Australian Government to implement the following non-exhaustive list of measures to ensure Australia complies with the ICJ’s ruling and does not aid or assist Israel’s unlawful occupation:
The Australian Government impose targeted sanctions, including asset freezes against Israeli individuals and entities involved in Israel’s illegal occupation, settlement enterprise, annexation, persecution, racial segregation and apartheid policies against the Palestinian people.
The Australian Government impose a comprehensive arms embargo on Israel. This arms embargo must include the suspension of all arms agreements and deals, and cover both the export, import and transfer of arms, including parts and components and other dual-use items. This military cooperation only serves to bolster the illegal Israeli occupation regime and its military forces.
The Australian Government suspend all defence cooperation with Israel and end its facilitation of defence industry partnership.
The Australian Government undertake an extensive review and urgent inquiry, with the purpose of identifying Australia’s economic relationships, investments, trade agreements, cooperation schemes and programs with Israel, and cancel them immediately.
The Australian Government direct all State Governments to end all agreements relating to cooperation with defence, agriculture and water and other such industry agreements with Israel.
The Australian Government immediately end any intention of entering into any free trade agreement with Israel.
The Australian Government enact legislation banning settlement goods and services from entering Australia’s marketplace.
The Australian Government enact legislation preventing Australian businesses from operating, trading, or investing in settlements or contributing to their maintenance and/or expansion.
The Australian Government direct the halt of unlawful flow of investment from Australian charities that benefit the illegal settlement enterprise and Israel’s military.
The Australian Government provide clear advice and direction to Australia’s Future Fund, Australian businesses, universities, pension funds, registered charities, and financial institutions to ensure they are not engaging in commercial or non-commercial activities with Israel.
The Australian Government investigate and prosecute dual citizens serving in Israel’s military and provide clear directives to citizens to refuse to enlist in the Israeli military.
The Australian Government support the investigation and prosecution of international crimes committed as part of the Situation in Palestine at the International Criminal Court (ICC) and commit to fully cooperate with the Office of the Prosecutor of the ICC, in line with Australia’s international and domestic legal obligations.
The Australian Government refer the situation in Palestine to the ICC.”
Join us one last time this year to demand our government takes action!

1056 Palestinian health workers have been murdered by Israel since Oct 7th 2023.
Why are our health organizations and so many of our health care colleagues still silent on Israel's attacks on hospitals, ambulances, health workers, and patients?
Thanks to the shameful impunity they receive, Israel has extended their heinous war crimes beyond Palestine, into Lebanon. Disregard for international law awarded to Israel sets a precedence for its negligence everywhere else in the world.

GLOBAL PEACE PETITION:
In conjunction with the event, The Muriel Matters Society is organising a petition which will be presented to the South Australian Parliament’s Legislative Council. If 10,000 signatures are collected a Parliamentary Committee will investigate and report to the Parliament, and the Government will be required to respond.
The petition highlights that we live in internationally turbulent times and are witness to the destructive consequences being endured by those living in war zones throughout the world; and that we believe every member of every community needs to come together in support of global peace.
Please Download the Petition, gather signatures and return to The Society on or before 31 January 2025
